A new study breaks down the reasons—they’re complicated<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://mmm360.blogspot.com" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="1200" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin3qECMmDRCgnzxjl5CNmj3JJEVOkUISRmtcjShB_9jAZj_NkjjzLvI06Aa47Qw-7gQE1gmFWWY_uTnnL-NVwXtRNNBStLm1MqVM2i8aYzwqtdVjDsp9uOnhy0yyh6-TOKULu4naUy1Ps/w640-h360/image.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Cheating: it’s the ultimate relationship violation and a notorious relationship killer. A favorite gossiping pastime, the phenomenon is frequently discussed but difficult to study. The goal is to avoid getting caught, so why confess infidelity in the name of science?</p><p>But scientists can offer us new insight on a topic often shrouded in stigma and mystery. As researchers have recently demonstrated, cheating is rarely a simple affair. There are many reasons why people cheat, and the patterns are more complex than common stereotypes suggest. A fascinating new study sheds some light on these motivations.</p><p>The investigation included 495 people (87.9 percent of whom identified as heterosexual), who were recruited through a participant pool at a large U.S. university and through Reddit message boards with relationship themes. The participants admitted to cheating in their relationship and answered the question at the root of the mystery: Why did you do it? An analysis revealed eight key reasons: anger, self-esteem, lack of love, low commitment, need for variety, neglect, sexual desire, and situation or circumstance. These motivations not only influenced why people cheated but how long they did so, their sexual enjoyment, their emotional investment in the affair and whether their primary relationship ended as a result.<span></span></p><a name='more'></a><p></p><p>Though most cheating involves sex, it is rarely just about sex itself. Most participants felt some form of emotional attachment to their affair partner, but it was significantly more common in those who reported suffering from neglect or lack of love in their primary relationship. Around two thirds of participants (62.8 percent) admitted to expressing affection toward their new partner. And about the same proportion (61.2 percent) engaged in sexually explicit dialogue with them. Roughly four out of 10 (37.6 percent) had intimate conversations, while one in 10 (11.1 percent) said, “I love you.” Those who reported feeling less connected to their primary partner experienced greater emotional intimacy in the affair, perhaps as a way of fulfilling that need. Similarly, when infidelity was linked to lack of love, individuals found the experience more intellectually and emotionally satisfying.</p><p>Participants’ satisfaction with sex differed depending on the reason for their affair. People reported feeling more sexually fulfilled when they cheated because of desire, lack of love or a need for variety. Those who cited a situation as the primary cause were far less satisfied. Much of the sexual activity was limited to kissing (86.7 %percent) and cuddling (72.9 percent). In fact, the study found that only half of the cheaters reported having vaginal intercourse.</p><p>The reason for the infidelity also greatly impacted its length. In some cases, the relationship was a brief tryst, while others were a longer and deeper attachment. Those who cheated because of anger (such as a wish to “seek revenge”), lack of love or need for variety had a longer affair, while those motivated by the situation (such as those who were “drunk” or “overwhelmed” and “not thinking clearly) ended it earlier. Women also had a longer affair on average than men.</p><p>In the end, only a third of participants ultimately admitted the cheating to their primary partner. Women were more inclined to fess up than men. Those who came clean were more likely to have cheated out of anger or neglect rather than sexual desire or variety. This suggests that their confession was possibly a form of retribution and a way to exact revenge instead of a way to clear their conscience. The participants who confessed were also more likely to form a committed relationship with the affair partner.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://mmm360.blogspot.com" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="816" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKvVeL_UvcVryOwcffIs4sW4bKiuhipKP_RzACqi6-xlxgaVnNo4aMd3QWGI82HmrITyuBLlA1fhl_P8AvfppX1xwzmLdmKSHqzzcvg-KK321ch60h2J4i4w35KEHeERZ_hT2lqK6osYs/w493-h640/image.png" width="493" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p><p>While infidelity is typically a clandestine enterprise, some cheaters were less careful than others, perhaps intentionally. Those cheating because of lack of love went on more public dates and displayed more public affection toward their partner. PDA was also common for those seeking variety or looking to boost their self-esteem. On the other hand, situational cheaters were less inclined to cheat out in the open, perhaps because they hoped to return to their primary relationship without getting caught.</p><p>So is an affair really a relationship killer? Ultimately, the fate of the participants’ primary relationship depended less on the act itself and more on what motivated it. Cheating was more likely to end a relationship when it arose from anger, lack of love, low commitment or neglect. And it was less likely to do so when the infidelity was circumstantial. Surprisingly, only one in five (20.4 percent) of relationships ended because of the affair. The same number of couples (21.8 percent) stayed together despite their primary partner finding out, while slightly more (28.3 percent) stayed together without their partner discovering their infidelity. The remaining relationships broke up for noncheating reasons.</p><p>Rarely did infidelity lead to a real relationship. Only one out of 10 of the affairs (11.1 percent) ultimately turned into a full-fledged commitment—one of the preconceptions that turns out to be true.</p><p><br /></p><p>ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S)</p><p>Gary W. But most of all, they show employers that you can focus and learn and that you take your career seriously.</p><p class="MsoNormal">So, what does it take to climb the ranks of IT?</p><p class="MsoNormal">Information technology (IT) is a highly dynamic field that provides plenty of opportunities for career advancement. In 2019, the IT market exceeded $2.461 billion. Very few markets, if any, are rising as fast as information technology. And as the industry continues to evolve and change, new types of certifications continue to appear on the market.</p><a name='more'></a><p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Given the many<a href="<a href="https://cciedump.spoto.net/blog/is-it-difficult-to-get-pmp-certification_146.html">is the PMP exam hard</a> <a href="https://cciedump.spoto.net/blog/is-it-difficult-to-get-pmp-certification_146.html">view SPOTO</a> https://cciedump.spoto.net/pmp-dumps.php"> specializations, certifications, career paths, and top providers</a> like <a href="https://cciedump.spoto.net/pmp-dumps.php" target="_blank">SPOTO</a>, An Outstanding IT Certification Online Training with 18 Years Of Educational Experience, it is nearly impossible for someone in the IT industry to find themselves without a job or, at least, a prospect. For anyone looking to start down a path or change their career, IT is a perfect place to do so.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In terms of wages, the computer and information technology industry will more than make up for the time and resources you invested in the first place. To put things into perspective, consider that the average annual wage for all occupations in the United States is $38,640. By comparison, IT finds itself at a hefty $86,320. What is more, statistics show that people who have a certificate will earn 13.7% more than their non-certified colleagues.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In my career, it has always been easier to prepare for a certification that covers technology that I am working with.</p><p class="MsoNormal">If you are already working in your desired career field, sometimes learning the skills related to a new technology you work on daily will have more impact than simply getting another certification.</p><p class="MsoNormal">An example of this <a href="<a href="https://cciedump.spoto.net/blog/is-it-difficult-to-get-pmp-certification_146.html">view SPOTO</a>">CISCO CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, CISSP, CISA, ORACLE, REDHAT LINUX</a> And Other Certifications offered by SPOTO who The Leaders are On IT Certification & Online Training Agencies. After enjoying a lull in transmission throughout the summer and early autumn - thanks to the first round of nationwide shutdowns - most European countries were hit with a tsunami of new infections in mid-September. The blitz of cases triggered a domino effect right across the continent, with nations one-by-one announcing national lockdowns in October and November, albeit shorter and less restrictive than the measures in spring.And now that the interventions have had more than a week to take effect, most of these nations are seeing infections either decreasing dramatically or flatlining. </p><p>But EU countries that ignored calls for another national lockdown and instead stuck with regional Covid-19 strategies - most notably Italy and Spain - are still seeing infections rapidly rise Belgium, which went into its second lockdown on November 2, appears to have come out the other side of its second wave. In the days leading up to the shutdown, the country was recording almost 2,000 daily infections per million people, which was the highest on the continent. But the Belgians have managed to drive down cases to 540 per million, as of November 11 - the most recent snapshot.</p><p>The Czech Republic was one of the first EU members to go into a second national lockdown on October 21. At that point, the Czechs were reporting 1,400 cases of the disease per million every day. But, thanks to the two-week shutdown, that figure has been halved, and currently stands at 734 per million today. A dramatic plunge in cases has also been observed in France, which went into a month-long lockdown on October 30. On that date, the country had an infection rate of 730 per million people, up from just 113 per million the month before. France's case rate peaked on November 8 - it takes more than a week for interventions to take effect - but it has since fallen by more than half. The current rate is 508 people per million. </p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuRhMR8u_GWBuUnFx6ix3BW7echCSO0rhGOXbwVZd7lZWzr6az4P5sckqcrGyEBxyHYDPZm2w20JPoCFsXS-hKcJCetwmadaYY4rf5K41ngCdyl8xvqXWJsleXXII6iQj25LvoyEFr28Q-/s959/covid.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="637" data-original-width="959" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuRhMR8u_GWBuUnFx6ix3BW7echCSO0rhGOXbwVZd7lZWzr6az4P5sckqcrGyEBxyHYDPZm2w20JPoCFsXS-hKcJCetwmadaYY4rf5K41ngCdyl8xvqXWJsleXXII6iQj25LvoyEFr28Q-/w640-h426/covid.PNG" width="640" /></a></p><p>In the Netherlands - which announced a two-week lockdown on November 3 - the daily diagnosis rate has fallen to 315 per million after peaking at 650 on October 31. In Ireland, where a six-week lockdown was enforced on October 19, the daily infection rate is 78 per million, compared to 260 on October 19. The UK has not seen its case rate plummet yet but it only went into its second lockdown on November 5 - but infections are no longer growing exponentially. The case rate was just 60 per million at the end of September but soared to 393 the following month. It appeared the lockdown measures had worked when cases plateaued for about a week. But an unusually high number of daily cases on Thursday and Friday have raised eyebrows and left scientists scratching their head as to why.</p><p>Germany's lockdown on November 2 has also yet to make an impact on its case rate - which has climbed to nearly 300 per million from just 16 at the start of October.</p><p><br /></p><p>There are mounting calls for Italy and Spain to go into second lockdowns because the regional approaches adopted there appear to be failing. Italy's daily case rate is currently 628 per million - up from 44 at the start of October - while Spain's was as high as 1,120 per million on November 9.</p><p><br /></p><p>In Sweden, which was widely praised for deciding against a national lockdown in the spring, officials have had to impose a 10pm curfew on bars and restaurants for the first time because of climbing cases. The restriction marks a departure from the previous guidelines that relied mainly on voluntary measures to stop transmission. Authorities have also asked people not to meet others from outside their household. The case rate therre is about 425 per million, up from 80 a month ago.</p><p>The case rate data was compiled from the website Our World in Data, which aggregates testing statistics from around the world. It comes as Germany reported a record number of virus cases on Friday with 23,542 infections confirmed in a 24-hour period, while the UK also reported a record 33,470 cases on Thursday.</p><p>Following the German announcement, Spahn said it was 'too early to tell' whether additional measures introduced on November 1 - including the closure of all bars and restaurants - was doing enough to curb virus cases. Spahn warned that it was unlikely life would go back to normal in December and said winter events like office Christmas parties, birthdays and wedding were unlikely to go ahead. 'We never said that November would be so hard and then everything would be like before.' Bavarian premier Markus Soeder also cautioned against lifting curbs too quickly, saying: 'If we just lower the numbers a little bit now and stop too soon, we might fall into a constant alternation of lockdown and opening. 'That would be hard for people to understand. Therefore, we have to continue with the treatment we have started until successful.'</p><p>Meanwhile in France, Mr Castex gave an update on the country's new full-scale lockdown Thursday - two weeks after people were all-but banned from leaving their houses, except for essential activity. The Prime Minister revealed that hospital admissions in France are now at an all-time high, with one in four deaths linked to the virus. But, he said, the number of people infected per 100,000 has been dropping for 10 days, and the number of virus patients is hospitals is expected to peak early next week. 'That's good news, but not sufficient' to lift lockdowns just yet, Castex said as he announced that the current restrictions will continue until at least December 1.</p><p>Even after December 1, he warned that things will not return to how they were over the summer, with restaurants, bars, gyms and tourist sites will remain closed until further notice. He also warned that people should not be planning any big Christmas or New Year's parties. However, he said that if hospitalization rates start to slow, the government can start allowing stores selling non-essential goods to reopen in December.</p><p><br /></p><p>Castex promised 'massive economic support' for businesses forced to close, after hundreds of billions already spent to keep people employed and to keep businesses afloat. Meanwhile in Sweden, chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell was forced to acknowledge that the country is battling a second wave of the pandemic after suggesting in August such a scenario was unlikely. 'I don't think the definition is that important, but we see community spread in many regions simultaneously right now,' Tegnell said.</p><p><br /></p><p>Sweden registered 4,658 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, just below a daily record set last week, in a resurgence of the virus that has seen hospitalisations and intensive care admissions mount. Tegnell played down hopes that Sweden's severe spring outbreak of the virus might offer sizable protection through widespread immunity, something he had previously suggested would be the case.</p><p><br /></p><p>He also warned that travel restrictions could change between now and Christmas, and warned people not to make plans for large-scale gatherings. 'We are working on it right now, hopefully in a few weeks we will be able to be clear about what we want,' he said. Speaking three weeks ago, Tegnell had warned that Christmas gatherings would likely be impacted by the virus, with older relatives having to stay away. People should not plan large family parties with guests who travel from all over the country, Tegnell said at the time, adding that he plans to celebrate Christmas with a small group of his closest relatives.</p><p><br /></p><p>Europe's benchmark stock index fell on Friday, setting up to end its second straight week of gains on a glum note, as surging coronavirus cases compounded fears of the damage to the bloc's economy in the coming winter months.The pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.3% by 0805 GMT after jumping earlier this week on optimism around a working COVID-19 vaccine. The index has gained about 12% in the past two weeks, also buoyed by hopes of calmer global trade under U.S. President-elect Joe Biden.</p><p>France's CAC 40 index lost 0.1% as Prime Minister Jean Castex said there would be no immediate easing of a second COVID-19 lockdown, with the number of hospitalisations now higher than at the peak of the first wave. The energy index led declines, falling 1.4% with banking and travel stocks also dropping more than 0.8% in early trading.In company news, French power group EDF fell 0.3% after reporting a decline in third-quarter revenue as the COVID-19 pandemic sapped electricity demand and weighed on nuclear energy output in France.</p>Ceni_Plug 3m360http://www.blogger.com/profile/07326453236342532807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263586924000677015.post-24266293714797414072020-11-14T02:49:00.002-08:002020-11-14T02:49:38.512-08:00Guinness heiress, 19, dies in pool tragedy: Family mourn ’darling angel’<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioLJB-uwTIGoLcOnGEsh6_ZB1R9nsISnYl6zfoe4_voH3MC6pJsE-5MP-cMAFBXl8wUaUEwK6j2Got7_6Ykj5zUhvFtURixD_dNQcnsgMYz22mlFrMXhz7kc8EG6rM-YGjFMqPoosQ-DQ/s641/guniess+heries.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="641" data-original-width="637" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioLJB-uwTIGoLcOnGEsh6_ZB1R9nsISnYl6zfoe4_voH3MC6pJsE-5MP-cMAFBXl8wUaUEwK6j2Got7_6Ykj5zUhvFtURixD_dNQcnsgMYz22mlFrMXhz7kc8EG6rM-YGjFMqPoosQ-DQ/w636-h640/guniess+heries.PNG" width="636" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>She was their ‘darling angel’ with a heart of gold and everything to live for, But tragedy has struck the aristocratic Guinness family with the death of teenage heiress Honor Uloth in a freak swimming pool accident. Last night her ‘utterly devastated’ family paid an emotional tribute – and revealed how the 19-year-old’s wish for her organs to be donated has saved other lives. They said: ‘She always made it clear that if anything happened to her, she would like her organs to be donated to those in need.‘The doctors say that, with the matches they have found, it looks like she is going to help save four lives and seriously enhance ten more.’</p><p>Miss Uloth was found unconscious at the bottom of a swimming pool during a family barbecue in the summer. This week a coroner ruled it was a tragic accident.Her family said: ‘We have lost a daughter and sister who brought untold light and joy into our lives. She was so full of fun, laughter, kindness and adventure. She had this knack of bringing people together and making them feel good.’</p><p>The eldest daughter of Rupert Uloth and Lady Louisa Jane Guinness, whose father Benjamin Guinness was the 3rd Earl of Iveagh, she was spotted in the pool by her 15-year-old brother Rufus. He dived in to help her, the inquest heard. He pulled her out, but doctors were unable to save the Oxford Brookes University history of art student. She had suffered a broken shoulder and brain injuries, and she was pronounced dead in hospital six days later.The current Earl of Iveagh and the Guinness brewery family have an estimated worth of around £906million, and Miss Uloth’s death is the latest of a series of tragedies to strike the dynasty.</p><a name='more'></a><p></p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNHHb4ARPqfuYlIdAqED3e6pndiVkSdqAYY3MwipA5CJNkG8IgR_cVllmhEL0T-xICi1DA-dE6EbJOA3NLNg-DTnLjsLrPg_j5kCajVoY3oFyLVTH8TVC5Af-I6nNpCzjb1lcstsqzMHE/s759/guniess+heries.PNG+2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="759" data-original-width="616" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNHHb4ARPqfuYlIdAqED3e6pndiVkSdqAYY3MwipA5CJNkG8IgR_cVllmhEL0T-xICi1DA-dE6EbJOA3NLNg-DTnLjsLrPg_j5kCajVoY3oFyLVTH8TVC5Af-I6nNpCzjb1lcstsqzMHE/w520-h640/guniess+heries.PNG+2.PNG" width="520" /></a></p><p>On July 31, four families were at the barbecue at a £3.5million mansion overlooking Chichester Harbour in Sussex. Ice buckets filled with bottles of wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks were dotted around the large grounds that had a climbing frame, a tennis court, a firepit and a large pool with an attached hot tub, the inquest at Crawley Coroner’s Court was told. Miss Uloth, who had not been drinking alcohol, was soaking in the hot tub with two friends before going for a swim around 11pm.</p><p>Coroner’s officer Geoff Charnock told the hearing: ‘Altogether there were 19 people present at the barbecue consisting of four families. These families have all known each other for many years and have had many gatherings and barbecues together.</p><p><br /></p><p>‘During the course of the evening there was music playing and everyone was enjoying themselves in the warm weather. The other two young ladies remained in the hot tub and they were looking out onto the harbour with their backs to the pool and did not see where Honor went.‘A short while later, Honor’s brother was walking back towards the hot tub…and saw her lying at the bottom of the pool. He raised the alarm and rescued her from the pool. The adults commenced CPR while an ambulance was called.’</p><p>Paramedics managed to keep her alive and she was rushed to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester before being transferred to St Thomas’s Hospital in London, where she died ‘quietly and peacefully’ on August 6.Mr Charnock said: ‘Police conducted an investigation…but no one saw what happened to Honor or knew how she came to be lying at the bottom of the pool.’</p><p>He said one police theory was Miss Uloth had leaped off a rock used as a jumping platform and somehow hit her head on it.Another was she had slipped on the wet surface and banged her head, while a third theory was she had jumped into the pool and then hit her head, as she surfaced, on a raised lip around the pool which people can sit on. Senior Coroner Penelope Schofield said: ‘I record a conclusion of accident.’</p><p>She was the eldest of three children by Mr Uloth, 56, a former deputy editor of Country Life magazine, and her 53-year-old mother, Lady Louisa, whose father Benjamin Guinness was the chairman of the brewery empire from 1962 to 1986 and then its president until his death in 1992.Last night Mr Uloth told the Mail: ‘Honor was a diamond girl with a heart of gold whose ability to shine and bring lightness and joy was her life signature.’</p><p>A statement from the family, from Midhurst, West Sussex, said: ‘We will treasure so many memories about her: the sound of her singing and playing the piano…riding on the Downs and Commons in Sussex on the horses she loved; dancing and singing; trying to keep up with her off-piste in the Alps; sailing over her beloved Chichester Harbour where she spent so many happy weeks during her life; travelling the world with her and sharing her amazement and wonder…Her last day was spent riding polo ponies in the morning, seeing friends on the beach in the afternoon and enjoying an evening with close friends and family over a delicious al fresco supper. It was her perfect kind of day.’</p><p><br /></p><p>The Guinness dynasty has suffered a string of tragedies. Arthur Guinness, who started the brewery in 1759 and became the richest man in Ireland, fathered 21 children but lost ten before his own death. Many of his grandchildren became alcoholics, died in poverty or ended up in mental institutions. Later Lord Moyne, the British minister for Middle East affairs, was murdered in Cairo by terror group the Stern Gang in 1944. The John Lennon song, A Day In The Life, was written about Tara Browne, son of Oonagh, Lady Oranmore, who drove his Lotus Elan at high speed through red lights in South Kensington, smashing into a van and killing himself. Lady Henrietta Guinness jumped off a bridge in Umbria, Italy, in 1978 after never recovering from an Aston Martin car crash in the French Riviera. Four-year-old Peter Guinness died in a car crash in the same year.</p>Ceni_Plug 3m360http://www.blogger.com/profile/07326453236342532807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263586924000677015.post-18123197785651565982020-09-08T10:06:00.001-07:002020-09-08T10:06:45.317-07:00These three women stood up to Europe's longest-serving dictator. He broke into her house and demanded to date her. When she resisted his advances, he killed her.</div><div><br /></div><div>He then took the time to go downstairs and pour a glass of iced tea, waiting for Kristie Reed, Stacie’s 14-year-old sister, to come home from school. When Kristie asked him where her sister was, he dragged her down to the basement and stabbed her, leaving her to die.</div><div><br /></div><div>Or so he thought.<span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div><br /></div><div>The girls’ stepfather arrived home early, and upon finding their bodies, he frantically searched for the phone to call the police and EMTs.</div><div><br /></div><div>Upon extensive treatment, Stacie’s 14-year-old sister ultimately survived, the scars on her neck serving as visible evidence of the brutal attack. She was easily able to identify Paul Powell as the killer.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>Paul Powell showed no remorse in court, even going so far as to call the victims ‘stupid’. He was then convicted of Capital Murder and multiple other subsequent charges, making him eligible for Capital Punishment.</div><div><br /></div><div>When he was sentenced to death, his attitude quickly changed. He cried and begged for mercy. Unfortunately, mercy would come in the form of a legal loophole that switched his death sentence to a life sentence. His initial death penalty was reversed because there was inadequate proof of a special circumstance against the murder victim needed to authorize the death penalty.</div><div><br /></div><div>Believing he was safe from the death penalty due to double jeopardy, he sent an abusive letter to the prosecuting attorney in his case, Paul Ebert. He essentially admitted to every single detail, including the attempted rape of both girls, bragging about what he got away with.</div><div><br /></div><div>"Since I have already been indicted on first degree murder and the Va. Supreme Court said that I can't be charged with capital murder again, I figured I would tell you the rest of what happened on Jan. 29, 1999, to show you how stupid all of y'all are. I guess I forgot to mention these events when I was being questioned. Ha ha! Do you just hate yourself for being so stupid... and saving me?"</div><div><br /></div><div>He then sent a letter to his then girlfriend, telling her that he had planned all of the killings, including the murder of the Reed girls’ parents (which he didn’t carry out). He also sent death threats to Lorraine Reed, the mother of the two girls.</div><div><br /></div><div>His letter admitted to an attempted rape of the victim as part of the murder, which was a special circumstance. In the first trial, the prosecutor had been unable to prove an attempted rape required to authorize the death penalty, but he now had all the evidence he needed.</div><div><br /></div><div>The attorney immediately took the letters and sent them to a judge. The judge looked at the letters, declared that there was new evidence, and ordered a new trial. The letters he sent to his girlfriend, the attorney, and Lorraine Reed proved beyond a doubt that he was guilty of Capital Murder.</div><div><br /></div><div>He was convicted and sentenced to death a second time after another full trial in 2003. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Greek police have published photos of an apparent 'rape kit' discovered following the arrest of the so-called Beast of Kavos. On Friday, Dimitris Aspiotis was arrested after he plunged 100ft down a cliff in Kavos. Police officers scoured the area and found a stash of items close to where the 47-year-old was arrested.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They included a shotgun, pliers and two screwdrivers. Several mobile phones, gloves, knives, a solar charging panel, batteries, an oil lamp and a candle were also uncovered. Aspiotis, who has been dubbed the 'Beast of Kavos', broke his back after into a ravine on the Greek holiday island. He was reportedly arrested after emergency workers hauled him out of the spot on a stretcher. <a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
According to The sources authorities had to launch another manhunt for Aspiotis earlier this month. Two weeks ago an Albanian woman reported she was dragged into a forest and repeatedly raped at knifepoint for three days. Police say she reportedly identified her bearded attacker as Aspiotis, who survived his fall with multiple fractures. He was said to be in hospital under police guard in the island's capital of Corfu Town last night after the plunge last Friday at Lefkimmi. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<img alt="He is said to have fallen more than 100ft" src="https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article22080671.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_JS191854030.jpg" /></div>
<div>
The rapist is said to have fractured a leg, hip and spine and ruptured kidney in the fall. He reportedly is now faced with an immediate return to prison after allegedly violating his parole conditions. British victim Kayleigh Morgan spoke out last September after learning her tormentor had been freed from jail 43 years early. The British Airways stewardess, who bravely waived her anonymity to speak of her horrific ordeal, demanded answers on his early release. Kayleigh was a holiday rep in 2010 when Aspiotis attacked her in Corfu. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He had been released just six weeks before the assault, after serving just half of a six-year sentence for raping three British women in incidents between 1997 to 2005. Kayleigh was among Britons he raped in 46 days in 2010, and she described how he subjected her to a 14-hour ordeal. It was feared Aspiotis had preyed on up to 100 women. The case caused sparked international scandal when it emerged detectives had identified him as their prime suspect immediately after a previous rape in July, 2010. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<img src="https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article22080675.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_JS190247601.jpg" /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He raped four more four more women, including Kayleigh, before police got in contact with the British Consulate to request help tracing Aspiotis. Authorities launched a manhunt and captured Aspiotis after he had been on the run 18 days. In 2012, Aspiotis, was jailed for 52 years. But after being released early, he was confronted on This Morning in September 2019, after sneaking back to the resort where he committed his crimes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<img src="https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article22080810.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_Beast-of-Kavos-Dimitris-Aspiotis.jpg" /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Morgan appeared on the show to speak about her ordeal. She told how she was spending the summer as a holiday rep working in Kavos in 2010, when Aspiotis targeted her. Aspiotis came up behind Kayleigh as she took an afternoon stroll on the beach and asked her for the time. He then hit her in the face and dragged her into the woods, taking her phone and money so she could not escape him. She told how he raped her five times during a 14-hour ordeal that left her fearing for her life. "I had no idea what else he was capable of doing," she told Good Morning's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. The rapist's early release prompted protests from British MPs, who Greek authorities to intervene.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<img src="https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article22080673.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_JS191292436.jpg" /></div>
<div>
After she fled him she went straight to the police, despite her rapist's warnings he would kill her if she reported him. Police showed her a picture of Aspiotis immediately after she told them about the attack. "It makes me feel sick that they knew he was out there," she said.</div>

David Mota, known as Mota Jr, was found dead after he was reported missing over two months ago.<div><br /></div><div> The Portuguese musician went missing on March 15, when it is believed he was kidnapped outside of his family home in the municipality of Sintra. The rapper's mother, Filomena Mota, said he had received a phone call in the middle of the night to go down to the door of the building. It is believed he was then abducted by two armed men in hoods.</div><div><br /></div><div> Speaking to TVI in April, Filomena said she received a call from a neighbour at 2am asking if her son was okay - and she then realised he was not in his room. She also said she found her son's hat and slippers at the entrance to the building, as well as splashes of blood in the elevator, suspecting that Mota Jr had been abducted. Filomena also revealed that on the night of the abduction she answered a call made to Mota Jr’s phone, from a girl who claimed she was going to enter the building with him when instead two men pointed a gun at the young man and sent her away. <a name='more'></a></div><div><img alt="Despite bragging of a billionaire lifestyle online, it has since been revealed the rapper was indeed pretending" height="640" src="https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/NINTCHDBPICT000584325991.jpg" width="513" /></div><div><br /></div><div>The rap artist was renowned for posting images of gold jewellery, luxury cars and wads of cash on social media. Despite bragging of a billionaire lifestyle on social media and in his music videos, it has since been revealed the rapper was not a billionaire at all. Police believe Mota Jr was tortured by his kidnappers as they demanded information on the whereabouts of his hidden wealth and luxury items. It is alleged he was then killed by his kidnappers - who came back the next day when the house was empty and used Mota Jr’s keys to get inside and rob the family home. More than two months after he was reported missing, the 28-year-old’s body was found in a wooded area some 50 kilometres from his home. According to TVI24, Mota Jr’s body was found on Monday, however it took until Tuesday to identify the body due to a high state of decomposition. </div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="The Portuguese rapper was found dead with signs of having been tortured" height="639" src="https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/NINTCHDBPICT000584326142.jpg" width="640" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The country's Judiciary Police have launched an investigation. Authorities have treated the case as a possible abduction and murder since the investigation began. The body has been taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy, the results of which have not been released. The rapper found fame after featuring on the hit Ca Bu Fla Ma Nau with fellow hip-hop artist Piruka which has been viewed over 21 million times on YouTube. Mota Jr reportedly claimed that Piruka owed him money from the song but Piruka denies this. The investigation is ongoing. Stardom Wrestling, the organization Hana was part of confirmed her death in a statement issued on Saturday May 23.<div><br /></div><div> “We are very sorry to report that our Hana Kimura has passed away. Please be respectful and allow some time for things to process, and keep your thoughts and prayers with her family and friends.” A cause of death was not immediately clear. However, the most recent update on her Instagram story on Friday featured a photo of her with her cat, with a caption that reads “goodbye.</div><div><br /></div><div>” She had also recently posted a series of troubling tweets, one of which, according to a fan translation, read that she didn’t “want to be a human anymore.” “Thank you to everyone who supported me,” read another message, which also implied that she had been cyberbullied. “I love it. I’m weak, I’m sorry.” Kimura, whose mother, Kyoko Kimura, was also a pro wrestler, made her debut at Wrestle-1 in 2016, winning her first title, the JWP Junior Championship, later that year. She also wrestled for Stardom during that time, and officially left Wrestle-1 to join Stardom in 2019, where she was the leader of the Tokyo Cyber Squad faction. She twice won the Artist of Stardom championship, in addition to a Goddess of Stardom championship. </div><div><br /></div><div> Kimura was also a member of “Terrace House: Tokyo,” the most recent season of the Japanese reality show which sees six young adults live together. She joined in the 20th episode, and was part of the current cast before “Terrace House,” like the rest of Netflix’s productions, halted shooting due to the coronavirus pandemic. The wrestling community shared their condolences to Kimura on Friday night. “Distraught,” wrestler Jamie Hayter wrote. “I don’t even know what to say or feel. Numb. I can’t express it. RIP Hana Kimura. Such a wonderful human being. The gaijin helper. All the potential. A beautiful soul. Kind. I just can’t even put in to f—g words how upsetting this is. I hope you found peace.” Wrestler Sü Yüng wrote, “I will always love and miss you, my friend. You are my little sister. ”</div>Ceni_Plug 3m360http://www.blogger.com/profile/07326453236342532807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263586924000677015.post-18936386231481749502020-05-23T13:28:00.002-07:002020-05-23T13:32:33.834-07:00Online Ticketing, Social Distancing, and Sanitizer: Drive-in cinemas berths in New york Lagos, Abuja During COVID-19<p style="margin: 0px;"><img alt="Cannes Cine-Drive: Cannes 'pays homage to film' with drive-in ..." height="360" src="https://amp.thenational.ae/image/policy:1.1023581:1590231208/FILE-PHOTO-People-sit-in-their-cars-to-watch-E-T-at-drive-in-cinema-in-Cannes.JPG?f=16x9&w=1200&$p$f$w=9ada400" style="cursor: move;" width="640" /></p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Drive-in movie theaters have been something of a salvation during the coronavirus pandemic. As one of the few entertainment joints that are safe to visit outside of the house, they’ve enjoyed a huge boost in popularity. But don’t call it a comeback, says Transit Drive-In Theater owner Rick Cohen.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Outdoor moviegoing, once seen as a relic from another century, has become the go-to spot for those itching to social distance from their couch. That’s left Cohen, whose venue is in upstate New York, regularly fielding calls from local and national reporters.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“I’m juggling all this media — they’re all over the drive-in resurgence,” Cohen tells Variety days after his theater opened for the season. “Drive-ins aren’t having a resurgence. Drive-ins have been doing well. It’s a resurgence of the media remembering that drive-ins still exist.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">That may be true, but there’s no denying that drive-in theaters are uniquely suited to thrive while most multiplexes stay closed due to the global heath crisis. And though there aren’t many left in the U.S. — about 300 drive-ins still exist, compared to over 5,400 brick-and-mortar theaters — they’ve been rare bright spots for the exhibition industry. The bulk of those who own and operate cinemas are struggling to survive, having been left without a way to make money while theaters are shuttered.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">As the coronavirus pandemic continues to put a strain on film industries across the world, drive-in cinemas have reported a surge in attendance in the U.S., Germany, France, and parts of Asia.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Drive-in cinemas are experiencing a boom not just for films but for church services and concerts.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">A drive-in theatre or drive-in cinema is a form of cinema structure consisting of a large outdoor movie screen, a projection booth, a concession stand, and a large parking area for automobiles.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Within this enclosed area, customers can view movies from the privacy and comfort of their cars.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Back here in Nigeria, as the effects of coronavirus pandemic bite harder in Nollywood, a Nigerian filmmaker, Charles Okpaleke, is pioneering the introduction of drive-in cinemas in Abuja and Lagos.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"></p><a name='more'></a><br /><p></p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Transit Drive-In, located about 30 minutes north of Buffalo in Lockport, is seasonal (probably a good thing considering western New York’s arctic chill during much of the winter). It doesn’t open until summer when it’s finally warm enough to spend time outdoors. Cohen had been planning to dust off projectors and set up shop in the middle of March, just in time for “A Quiet Place Part II,” a sequel to John Krasinski’s horror hit. When Paramount pulled it from release, Cohen delayed the reopening — first voluntarily before it became mandatory two weeks later.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Last week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave drive-ins in his state permission to sell tickets again and Transit Drive-In was able to open just in time for Memorial Day weekend. For many cinemas, Cohen’s included, the end May through Labor Day in September remains one of busiest times of year.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">But for the first time in the 33 years that Cohen has been running herd, things at Transit Drive-In look a little different.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">For one, he’s capped capacity in the parking lot at 50% to allow more space between vehicles. That’s resulted in roughly 640 spots up for grabs nightly across five screens. There’s an average of 2.3 adults per car, but even with admission running at $10 a pop, Cohen’s math suggests there’s “potential money left on the table.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“We routinely sell out in the summertime when there’s a big new movie and the weather is good,” he said.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Also for the first time, tickets are only being sold online. That safety measure limits the handling of cash, while ensuring spots aren’t oversold. “I’m going to have to pay higher processing fees because I can’t take cash,” he said. “But it’s better than being closed.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">There are more employees working than usual to assist with new protocol, meaning Cohen’s payroll will be higher with less revenue coming in. Still, he isn’t worried about restrictive sales or making ends meet. “Opening a drive-in, for me, wasn’t about how much money I can make it. It was about serving the community safely,” he said.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Here’s what a typical night now looks like:</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">5:50 p.m. — Arrive at the Transit Drive-In</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Cohen’s day begins well before he first shows up to work, often answering emails and sifting through voicemails from patrons before he pivots to run other errands. Even though tapes don’t start rolling until 9 p.m., he gets in just before the clock strikes 6 to greet the eager customers hoping to get the best spot in the lot.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“There’s only so many spaces in the front,” he said. “Before this, they would throw a Frisbee around or take the dog out. A drive-in is part camping, part movie theater and part tailgate party. So now, it’s a little less of each of those, but still a lot of fun.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">6 p.m. — Start to scan tickets</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">There are pros and cons to the online-only system for buying tickets, though overall they’ve found it has made arrivals more efficient. Employees can methodically scan tickets before sending customers through.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">But the new process is not without its hiccups.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“We noticed right away that people who buy their tickets on three days notice either make mistakes or change their minds,” he grumbles. “It’s really aggravating. We had to go into extensive detail on our website ticketing purchase page. Apparently ‘all transactions are final, no exceptions’ is not clear enough.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">6 p.m. – 9 p.m. — Selling concessions and keeping restrooms clean</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">No moviegoing experience would be complete without a large tub of popcorn and an ice cold soda. Plus, concession stand sales are a major source of revenue for theaters. Plexiglass has been installed at the snack bar, where each cashier is equipped with their own bottle of hand sanitizer. They’re also donning face masks and gloves. Only one register is permitted to take cash. It requires two employees, one to handle the food and one to handle the transactions. A second register accept credit cards and a third is reserved for advance orders handled by phone.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“I ordered hands-free sanitizer stations in March. I was lucky to get them in May,” Cohen said. “I had to beg my supplier for them. The producers can barely keep up. The fact that I got my hands on three of them… someone up there was looking out for me. I got lucky.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">There are two entrances to the snack bar, where two more staffers are monitoring the area to ensure there aren’t more than 10 people inside at once.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“That’s another team of staff members who wouldn’t be on the schedule that we’re providing for safety,” he said. “People aren’t going to police that themselves, you need someone to allow people in as room becomes available.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Restrooms are also a concern, Cohen recognizes, so attendants sanitize each of the 16 stalls after every use. That requires three extra people — one surveying lines outside the bathroom, a female to disinfect the ladies’ room and a male to clean the men’s room.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“We want every person who uses our restroom to feel safe. The only way to do that is to literally disinfect the stall after every use,” he said.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">9 p.m. Roll the tapes</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Most drive-in theaters entice families with an evening of double-bills. But in an effort to reduce the foot traffic in restrooms and concession stands, Transit Drive-in is only showing single features.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“We don’t want to encourage people to stay for two movies where there’s a crush to use the restroom in between,” Cohen said. “That’s a sacrifice our customers are making. It’s not something we prefer to do because one of the advantages of attending drive-ins has been double features.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Since studios are releasing new movies less frequently, recent films like the animated “Trolls World Tour” and thriller “The Invisible Man” have been mainstays on the marquee. “People love scary movies at drive-ins. Horror and suspense do well,” he said. “And family pictures are very popular.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">11:30 p.m. Usher the last car out and clean the premises</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Typically, showtimes are staggered so there isn’t a mad dash to leave. They’re still experimenting with what times work best. But for the most part, that aspect has been smooth sailing.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“Without intermissions, you don’t have concession-stand congestion,” he said. “When the movie is over, everyone leaves.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">When the final car exits the grounds, Cohen sends his crew to clean any garbage that’s been left behind.</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“That’s fun,” he jokes, “collecting covid-infected trash from the parking lot. We’re wearing PPE gloves and just tossing in garbage bag. As long as you’re conscious of what you’re doing and have protective gear, you don’t have to be wearing a hazmat suit.”</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">12 a.m. Send the crew home</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">Working at a drive-in often means late nights, but shifts have been ending slightly earlier in the age of coronavirus. Intermission is normally around midnight, which signals a blitz to buy popcorn, hot dogs and fries before the second film starts playing. On an average day, they’d leave around 2 a.m. — sometimes after 2:30 if it’s a lengthy movie. (“It should be a law,” he laments, “that all theatrical movies should be two hours or less.”)</p><p style="margin: 0px;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px;">“What’s weird is I feel more tired after a single-feature performance, getting out before midnight, than I did before when we were showing two movies,” Cohen said. “It’s a lot more stressful. You feel a lot more responsibility — the burden of people’s health and safety.”</p>Ceni_Plug 3m360http://www.blogger.com/profile/07326453236342532807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263586924000677015.post-71106633728174211712020-05-20T10:37:00.000-07:002020-05-20T10:37:17.862-07:00A couple vanished the same night of a car wreck. Police took 2 weeks to find their bodies, car.<br /><img alt="A couple went missing the same night of a car wreck. Family and friends are wondering why. The newly-engaged couple, Paige Escalera, 25, and Stephanie Mayorga, 27, were last seen on April 15, according to Wilmington Police. Their roommate, under the impression that she had to wait 72 hours to report the women missing, called police about their disappearance on April 19. At the time, authorities said that the two disappeared under “suspicious” circumstances. "They had also ordered food, which was discovered outside their door the following morning. All signs seemed to indicate the couple intended to return home that night," according to a statement issued by interim Police Chief Donny Williams last week. Investigators searched "broad areas of interest" for Escalera's grey 2013 Dodge Dart, police said. It was finally found less than seven miles from the women's apartment and more than two weeks after they were reported missing after police uncovered a 911 call about a high-speed crash from the night the women disappeared. <div><br /></div><div> Two bodies were found inside, and last week Williams announced that using dental records and visible tattoos, a medical examiner had identified Mayorga as the driver and Escalera as the passenger. "My biggest concern is why they didn’t conduct a reasonable search that night," Escalera's sister Stevie Jenkins told NBC News. "I feel like all the clues to find them were handed to them and they just brushed it off because they 'didn’t see anything,' as they reported." Local news site Port City Daily obtained the April 15th 911 call about the crash.</div><div><br /></div><div> The caller told police: “I just saw a car driving so fast and smash into the wall … Wow … Listen, this is like really serious. … This is a serious injury. … This is serious. … There’s a stop sign over here and he didn’t stop. … There’s a stop sign and he drives very fast, and I’m sure, I saw it with my mirror. … I saw in my glass mirror the car like disappear inside the tree. … I’m sure what I saw." Wilmington Police, emergency medical services, and fire crews responded and talked with the caller, who remained on the scene to help, but officers left in under 10 minutes, police said.<a name='more'></a></div><div><br /></div><div> “We are unable to locate any vehicle that appears to be crashed up and down River Road or near the intersections," an officer told dispatch eight minutes after crews arrived at the scene, Port City Daily reported. “You can clear all units off this.” Jenkins wants to know why crews didn't search longer while the 911 caller was there to guide them. "I feel like the biggest help is an eyewitness, who they said stayed on the scene, and no one was still able to find them," she said. "They use the excuse of not being able to see signs of broken branches but they told our family that an officer who seen broken branches is what led him to find the car on May 4th, 19 days after the accident." Police have said in a statement that when they returned to the scene of the reported wreck on May 4, "the only evidence of the crash was a faint tire imprint near the curb, as well as scuff marks on the curb itself." "The Dodge Dart was hidden in an area of thick vegetation, partially submerged in a swamp with only a small section of the roof visible from up above," police said in a statement. </div><div>\</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="Missing Lesbian Couple Found in Crashed Car - Knewz" src="https://knewz.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/stephanie-mayorga-paige-escalera-pd-1.jpg?w=450" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>"In addition, thick vegetation at the back of the car fully covered the taillights and prevented any reflection under a searchlight." "Data from the car’s computer shows the driver hit the brake at the same moment the vehicle struck the curb, which explains the lack of skid marks," the statement said. Tire tracks and broken limbs seen after the car was found were caused by a tow truck used to remove the car from the vegetation and the water, police said. Police said the Dodge's battery broke in half upon impact, "shutting off any lights or sounds that could have alerted first responders to the crash." Officers who had responded to the crash report had originally been on the scene of an armed robbery and left when they received calls about a second armed robbery that turned into a homicide, police said last week. For two weeks before finding the car, police said they had dedicated 1,600 man hours to the search for the missing women, fielding more than 100 tips, including a false lead from someone who said they had kidnapped the couple and wanted money. Police also said they interviewed friends and family of the couple and searched their social media profiles and Escalera's phone for clues. Police said investigators determined that "alcohol and speed were major factors in the wreck." </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The car was likely traveling between 102 and 103 mph when it hit a curb and went airborne, flying over a sloped area and landing 20 feet below, police said Thursday. The car "hit the ground 115 feet away from the road and skidded forward until it collided with a tree 150 feet off the roadway," police said, adding that the car was going so fast that less than a second elapsed between its hitting the curb and crashing into the ground. Police said "several open, empty beer bottles were discovered in the vehicle," and investigators discovered the women had bought a 12-pack of beer an hour before the crash. Surveillance photos also show one of the women holding a beer bottle as the couple left their apartment that night, police said. But they cannot say for sure whether Mayorga, who was driving, was drinking. "Due to the level of decomposition, it is unlikely that a toxicology report will yield results,” police said. The cause of death for both women was ruled to be the result of traumatic head and chest injuries sustained in the crash. Friends who gathered at a memorial near the crash site earlier this month said they thought the couple should have been found sooner. “If they would have come back and searched the area a little bit more the next morning, they would have been able to see [signs of an accident],” friend Jacqueline Garland lamented to local news site Port City Daily while attending a memorial at the crash site earlier this month.</div><div><br /></div><div> "This would be the first place that I would search the next day … I’m not even an investigator and I know these things." Bianca Pasquini, a friend of Mayorga's told Port City Daily that emotions about her friend's death quickly turned "from sadness to anger." "Someone reported an accident," she said. "The cops came with a flashlight, but you didn’t think to come back during the day?" When NBC News asked police on Tuesday if officers returned to the site of the reported crash in daylight and why they did not connect the reported accident to the missing women, a spokeswoman declined to comment and referred to the department's statements. "As an investigator, you would think to pull any call-ins or cases within three to five days of a missing persons report," Jenkins said. "It shouldn’t take a civilian to realize that."</div></div>Ceni_Plug 3m360http://www.blogger.com/profile/07326453236342532807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263586924000677015.post-29364211984199440762020-04-14T12:20:00.002-07:002020-04-14T12:20:57.302-07:00Coronavirus Conspiracy Claims: For China, the ‘USA Virus’ Is a Geopolitical Ploy<div><br /></div><div><img alt="People gathering on a beach in Rio de Janeiro last week. Brazil’s president has implied that the virus is less dangerous than experts say." src="https://static01.nyt.com/images/2020/04/06/world/00int-virus02sub/00int-virus02sub-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale" /></div><div><br /></div>As scientists continue to study how the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in Wuhan, China, and around the world, the infection’s early pathways have proven fertile ground for speculation and conspiracy theories. Although COVID-19’s earliest origins may remain uncertain, the story of one volley in the ongoing U.S.-China blame game shows that misinformation about the disease can be traced to specific speculations, distortions, and amplifications.
A hostile messaging war between U.S. and Chinese officials seeking to deflect blame for the pandemic’s harms has included the U.S. president labeling the pandemic a “Chinese virus” to a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson spreading unfounded speculation that the U.S. military had a hand in introducing the virus to Wuhan.<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div> That speculation fed off of widely debunked theories that the virus was human-engineered and the fact that U.S. military personnel took part in the Military World Games in Wuhan in October 2019.
On March 12, Zhao Lijian, a deputy director-general of the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Information Department, took to Twitter with a video clip in which U.S. Centers for Disease Control chief Robert Redfield said some patients who died from COVID-19 might not have been tested. Zhao added: “It might be US army [sic] who brought the epidemic to Wuhan.”
the coronavirus that became a global pandemic first surfaced late last year in Wuhan, China.</div><div><br /></div><div> But according to one common narrative making its way around Chinese messaging apps, an American soldier was patient zero. “Chinese netizens and experts” are urging the United States to release health information about a U.S. delegate who attended the Military World Games in Wuhan, asserted a February 22 story from Global Times. \The publication, an offshoot of the Chinese Communist Party organ People’s Daily, insinuated that a U.S. military cyclist might have brought the disease from Fort Detrick in Maryland. Chatter about American origins of the disease had begun a month earlier, in the wilds of China’s chat services and on tiny YouTube channels.</div><div><br /></div><div> That alone wouldn’t have amounted to much; conspiracies are as common on social media as ants at a picnic, and the small accounts speculating about “bioweapons” and “the USA virus” got little early traction.
But this time, Chinese state media picked up the story from internet chatter and turned it into an international phenomenon involving not only official media channels but influential diplomats as well. State channels with massive Facebook followings backed away from prior acknowledgments that the virus had originated in Wuhan, recasting the idea as merely a theory—just one of many unknowns. Zhao Lijian, the spokesman and deputy director general of the Information Department of China’s Foreign Ministry, speculated to his half-million followers on Twitter that the United States was secretly concealing early 2020 COVID-19 deaths in annual flu counts. In an unusually overt act of tinfoil-hat diplomacy, he shared an article from the notorious anti-American crackpot site GlobalResearch. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The headline reads, “COVID-19: Further Evidence that the Virus Originated in the U.S.”
Zhao’s implication that the United States and its military could be behind Wuhan’s outbreak, even inadvertently, sparked outrage. The U.S. government summoned Cui Tiankai, the Chinese ambassador to the United States, over the remarks. Cui later publicly disavowed the U.S. military conspiracy theory, and Chinese officials have not further amplified it.
Groundless speculation about the origins of the pandemic did not begin with Zhao, but the case of his eye-catching tweets reveals how China’s changing propaganda tactics have interacted with mangled news reporting, social media conspiracy theorizing, and underlying U.S.-China tensions—all resulting in high-profile misinformation about a public health crisis.<span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div><img alt="President Trump has pushed unproven drugs, despite warnings from scientists." src="https://static01.nyt.com/images/2020/04/06/world/int-virus04/merlin_171201069_efe9b57c-3c42-417a-b262-2998d767115d-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale" /></div><div><br /></div><div> An examination of social media posts across Weibo, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit in English, Chinese, and Japanese reveals the context and pathways that brought this particular conspiracy theory to Chinese state media and diplomatic channels. Weeks of speculation and online conspiracy theorizing about military links to the virus’ origins or emergence, combined with a broadening uncertainty about the circumstances of Wuhan’s outbreak and increasingly brittle U.S.-China rhetoric, laid the groundwork for Zhao’s inflammatory tweets and the reaction that followed. </div><div><br /></div><div> In the spiraling relations between China and the West, even the COVID-19 crisis is an opportunity to score points—and no opportunity can be wasted. The Trump Administration has obfuscated its torpid response to the crisis by repeating concerns over China’s official figures. In turn, Beijing has sought to boost its soft power by recasting itself from source of the deadly pandemic to the provider of much-needed aid and expertise. On Tuesday, as rows of field hospitals were being built to treat COVID-19 patients in New York City’s Central Park, a plane load of medical supplies arrived in the city from China.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div> “The first of 22 scheduled flights to help slow the spread of #Covid_19 in the #US,” said the state-run China Daily in a tweet.
But it is Europe that has become the key propaganda battleground. In a recent blog post, E.U. chief diplomat Josep Borrell warned that the “politics of generosity” concealed “a geo-political component including a struggle for influence.” China, he added, “is aggressively pushing the message that, unlike the U.S., it is a responsible and reliable partner … Armed with facts, we need to defend Europe against its detractors.”
Theories Involving the U.S. Military Circulated on Social Media as Early as January
Speculation or conspiracy theory writings about a potential role for the U.S. military in Wuhan’s outbreak circulated weeks before Zhao, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, amplified the idea on Twitter. </div><div><br /></div><div> Since several platforms have pledged to remove disinformation related to the origin of the coronavirus, and our research started in mid-March, some materials could have been removed. Still, speculation about a U.S. role can be traced at least as far back as January. Though the earliest speculation did not necessarily catch on, some early references include:
January 2: a Chinese-language YouTube channel had shared a video dismissing the idea that the pneumonia in Wuhan was the result of U.S. genetic warfare, which could imply at least some dissemination of the idea prior to this.
January 20: a Twitter user claimed the virus was 90% similar to one that had earlier been reported to a U.S. viral gene database.
January 21: another Twitter account wrote plainly that the “pneumonia of unknown origin in Wuhan” was caused by a “biochemical weapon developed by the U.S. military.”
January 31: a video appearing to be an old TV segment on alleged U.S. biological warfare during the Korean war was shared to YouTube with a title asking, “Were SARS, MERS, and COVID-19 U.S. Plots?”</div><div> By February 1, Twitter activity included speculation that the virus was linked to U.S. attendance at the Military World Games, which took place in Wuhan in October 2019—an idea that featured in the conspiracy theory article Zhao shared almost six weeks later. </div><div><br /></div><div><img src="https://fsi-live.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/styles/820xauto/public/zhao_lijian-blog-sio-v2.png?itok=y2yx3YfZ" /></div><div>One account posted messages in response to CNN and BBC reporting claiming that the virus emerged near the hotel where U.S. participants stayed.
The coronavirus has given rise to a flood of conspiracy theories, disinformation and propaganda, eroding public trust and undermining health officials in ways that could elongate and even outlast the pandemic.
Claims that the virus is a foreign bioweapon, a partisan invention or part of a plot to re-engineer the population have replaced a mindless virus with more familiar, comprehensible villains. Each claim seems to give a senseless tragedy some degree of meaning, however dark.
Rumors of secret cures — diluted bleach, turning off your electronics, bananas — promise hope of protection from a threat that not even world leaders can escape.
The belief that one is privy to forbidden knowledge offers feelings of certainty and control amid a crisis that has turned the world upside down. And sharing that “knowledge” may give people something that is hard to come by after weeks of lockdowns and death: a sense of agency.
